MASH – Action Sport at its best
The excitement is at its peak! MASH kicks off tomorrow, Friday 26 June. For three days, the Olympic Park will be a fascinating venue where you can experience sport, excitement and a sense of community. Five contests featuring outstanding international athletes and the MASH Fest, with its wide range of activities, showcase action sports ‘at their best’.
“As I do every year, I’m looking forward to three days of MASH and very much hope that, despite the heatwave, tens of thousands of visitors will come to the park once again. MASH is a fixed date in the diaries of many action sports fans, partly because we introduce new themes every year. This year, for example, the theme inclusion,” explains Olympic Park Director Marion Schöne, adding: “The wonderful setting of our park and the mix of highly exciting action sports and a relaxed atmosphere is what makes MASH so special.”
The City of Munich has been a key partner and sponsor of the action sports festival right from the start. “Anyone who has been to MASH and experienced the excitement of the event understands why the City of Munich has been keen to support it for years. Action sports are very popular in Munich and go down very well with young people. Promoting this is a priority for me. It’s important to make it easily accessible. MASH offers exactly that. Because here you’ll find sport, excitement and fantastic, communal experiences – even without having to buy a ticket. I’m looking forward to MASH and I can only encourage the people of Munich to come to the Olympic Park,” said Verena Dietl, Munich’s mayor for sport.
One venue, five contests and plenty of excitement and airtime
The sports programme features five contests. Spectacular tricks and plenty of airtime are on show from the skateboarders, as the vert returns to the Olympic Park. As at the 2013 X Games, the four-metre-high and 19-metre-wide halfpipe will be set up on the platform in front of the grass terraces by the Olympic Lake. A first-class view is guaranteed here. The same goes for the 80-metre-long jump line on Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz, where not only BMX riders but also MTB riders will be competing this year. The latter last took part in MASH back in 2016. The wakeboarders will, of course, be back at the start. But there’s something new to experience here too. Alongside the ‘classic’ competitions, there’ll be a Best Trick contest. Although this has been held before in previous years, it’s never been quite like this. This year, the contest will be held on a kicker specially designed for MASH, the size of which is sure to present a challenge of a special
kind – as there is currently no larger kicker. And another comeback: the street dancers are returning to the park. They’ll be battling it out at the Theatron in the decisive qualifier for the Red Bull Dance Your Style Germany Tour.
At the heart of the scene: the MASH Fest
Lively, exhilarating, inclusive and brimming with creative ideas – that’s the MASH Fest. This is where the scene really comes to life. The chill-out area invites you to linger and relax, whilst a wide range of activities – such as skateboarding, dance and graffiti workshops – promise wonderful experiences. From taster sports sessions and artistic performances to musical entertainment and a diverse range of culinary delights, there’s something for everyone. And don’t miss the after-party with the Crux Pistols on Saturday evening. The MASH Fest is a hub of cultural diversity and constantly offers new experiences.
Sun and heat protection at the MASH site Germany has been experiencing record-breaking temperatures for days now. And the forecast for the MASH weekend in Munich is for nothing but sunshine. To make the experience as pleasant as possible for MASH visitors during the 45- to 60-minute contests and at the MASH Festival, additional shaded areas are being created on the site and more drinking water stations are being set up. Sun cream dispensers are also dotted around the site. Last but not least, temporary water misters will be in use in the spectator areas. For those looking for a bit of cooler air between contests, the Olympic Hall (Level 3) is also available.
