DAY 2 at MASH
What a MASH Saturday! 35,000 enthusiastic visitors enjoyed outstanding action sports and the unique atmosphere of the MASH Fest in glorious sunshine. The sporting programme offered one decision after another.
It started with the elimination of the wakeboarders. The American Stuckey brothers, Trent and Gavin, who both came first in their heats, made it to the final, which will be held on Sunday. In addition, Joe Battleday (GBR), Benny Heatley (AUS), Liam Peacock (GBR) and Max Milde from Duisburg will be the only German athletes in the final. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the other German riders Nico v. Lerchenfeld and Dominik Gührs. And Felix Georgii from Allgäu had to cancel his participation before the elimination due to injury. He was replaced by Jules Charraud (FRA).
The men's skateboard qualifying already gave an indication of how exciting and high-calibre the final in the evening would be. In the early afternoon, Norway's Elias Nilsen took first place. Danny León (ESP) was second in the qualifying and Luigi Cini (BRA) third. Local Tyler Edtmeyer from Lenggries came fourth with consistent runs, which also gave hope for more. The remaining starting places went to Ramon Notz (SUI), Jake Wooten (USA), Jason Lijnzaat (NED) and Vincent Matheron (FRA).
After the skaters had qualified, the BMX riders took to the ‘playground’ at the Olympic Lake to determine their starters for the final. And even here they showed their extraordinary skills, even if some of them were certainly saving tricks and lines for Sunday. In the end, Jacob Thiem (USA) came first, Nick Bruce (USA) second and Marin Rantes (CRO) third in the final. They were followed by Jude Jones (GBR), Tom Justice (GBR), Dean Florian (GER), Sasha Cambon (FRA) and Sikharin Supanmart (GER). Local Paul Thölen missed out on a place in the final in ninth place.
And it continued seamlessly: after qualifying, a MASH novelty was on the programme: for the first time, the BMX riders competed in a team contest, which had never been held in this format before. The competition was organised in four teams of three riders each, who were drawn by lot on Thursday evening. The riders in each team only had one run of 20 seconds each in the heats - there was no time for restraint. Everyone had to show what they could do right away. The teams of Tom Justice with Jose Cedano (CHI) and Sikharin Supanmart and Dean Florian with Paul Thölen and Jude Jones made it to the final. With 238.66 points, Team Florian ultimately won the new contest, which went down extremely well with both the riders and the spectators on the grass steps. And Paul Thölen was able to make up a little for his elimination in the qualifying round with this success.
Later in the afternoon, things got serious for the wakeboarders - their final on the new and challenging course on the lower Olympic Lake was on the agenda. And the six top female athletes impressively showed what they are capable of. Italian Claudia Pagnini secured victory by a wide margin with the first of her three runs. None of her competitors were able to match her score of 89.33 and the runner-up from 2024 was crowned this year's winner. Katinka Buiting (NED) came second. And just like last year, the youngest in the field, 17-year-old Campell Scarborough (USA), took third place - but she made it exciting, as she only secured her place on the podium with her final run. Fourth to sixth place went to last year's winner Rivers Hendrick (USA), Courtney Angus (AUS) and Elena Bodi (ESP).
The big showdown on the floating set-up on the Olympic Lake took place punctually at 7.00 pm. And the final of the skateboaders had it all. The athletes delivered a high-calibre contest. As in 2023, Spaniard Danny León was the deserved winner. He had three stay-on-runs, improved from run to run and showed his exceptional skills throughout. The battle for second place between Tyler Edtmayer and Luigi Cini was extremely exciting: After the first run Tyler was ahead of the Brazilian, in the second the Brazilian pushed past the German skater. But Tyler didn't give in and secured the silver medal of this year's men's skateboard contest at MASH ahead of Cini in the final run. Fourth to eighth place went to Jake Wooten, Elias Nilsen, Ramon Notz, Vincent Matheron and Jason Ljinzaat.
Four winners were crowned in the subsequent best trick competition. Naia Laso (ESP) won the women's first feature with a ‘Kickflip Indy over the box’ and Luigi Cini won the men's with a ‘Backside 360 Kickflip Stalefish Grab’. Lola Tambling and Jake Wooten won the second feature with a ‘Frontside Rock'n'Roll’ and a ‘Transfer Frontside 5050 to fakie’ respectively.
